Scottish Rite Brethren,
Our Summer is drawing to a close. Soon we will be back to Labor. Somehow Labor and Refreshment seem the same to me.
A week ago, I returned from a visit to the House of the Temple. The visit was remarkable in many ways. Although the House of the Temple is an architectural marvel, the work that goes on behind the scenes is very remarkable as well. From computer services to building restoration the House of the Temple is staffed with creative and hard-working employees. It is hard to believe the many and extensive programs that are piloted and sustained at the House of the Temple. I know the money I give for the preservation of the House of the Temple is put to good use. Take the opportunity to view the YouTube videos, Facebook postings and Podcasts distributed from the Supreme Council.
I hope many of our members took the opportunity to watch the “Statement of Unity” signing ceremony which was broadcast from the House of the Temple on September 7th. This a was very historical event which strengthens our Fraternity.
We will hold an Orient workshop over ZOOM on October 8th. I hope this gives everyone enough time to prepare. I will be calling on members to “host” specific topics. The topics will include Membership, Masonic Education, Communications, Leadership, VMAP Program, Ritual, Building Restoration and Charitable Giving. If anyone has another topic which he considers important, please let me know. The link to register is included bellow.
I have appointed Nathan Neff as Orient Secretary. He has been doing this job for many years and the title will allow him the permissions he needs to serve the Orient more effectively.
We are still waiting for all the valleys to send in a calendar. If possible, the calendar should follow the Google format and extend at least six months. Please email it to secretary@portlandsr.com
The insurance inquiry sent by Ill. Jorge Franchi, 33°, Chief Financial Officer of the Supreme Council, needs to be completed by a Valley Officer. Please complete this form as soon as possible. Be as accurate as possible when completing this form. It is very important to get accurate information. Notify Orient CFO, Ill. Eric Gazow, 33°, when you have completed this form.
Thank you all for supporting Scottish Rite Masonry!
Fraternally,
Rick Komraus, 33°

Brethren,
The roll of the workmen has been called, and Illustrious Brother Walter “Walt” Eugene Johnson, Jr., 33°, Grand Cross, born August 12th, 1934, at Pueblo, Colorado, has not answered to his name. He was Initiated on November 25, 1955, Passed to the Degree of Fellow Craft on December 22nd, 1955, and Raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on January 21st, 1956, in South Pueblo Lodge No. 31, A.F.&A.M. of Colorado. He was Invested as Master or Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret of the 32° of the A.&A. Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, S.J., U.S.A., on November 14th, 1962, in the Southern Colorado Consistory of the Colorado Springs-Pueblo Valley in the Orient of Colorado, he was Invested as a Knight commander of the Court of Honour on November 14th, 2009, Coroneted as a 33rd Degree Inspector General Honorary on August 27th, 2013, and bestowed the 33° Grand Cross of the Court of Honour on August 19th, 2017.
Growing up in Pueblo, Colorado, Illustrious Brother Walt’s father was a Mason, and his parents were highly active in the Eastern Star, his father passed away during his early teens, and Bro. Walt became the man of the house. Bro. Walt was a Senior DeMolay and Boy Scout, this is where he learned the lessons of charity, morality, and hard work. Bro. Walt chose for his Eagle Scout project to teach the children at the local orphanage how to ski. He had to get permission from the Sisters who ran the orphanage, and he had to obtain the equipment for skiing. Bro. Walt not only received permission, but he also got the equipment donated for the class and became an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Central High School in Pueblo in 1952.
Bro. Walt attended college at the University of Colorado in Boulder and graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering and Electronics in 1957. While at University he was enrolled in the Senior Reserve Officer Training Corps, after graduating he joined the U.S. Navy, serving from 1957 to 1960, during that time he received a commission working in the Naval Investigative Service (NIS). He was in the Naval Reserve for 10 years, and became a Blue and Gold officer, mentoring youth about the possibility of going to the Naval Academy.
After his service Lincoln Mercury automotives became Bro. Walt’s calling professionally. He went into Automobile sales and operated Walt Johnson Lincoln Mercury in Pueblo. He also opened a Lincoln Mercury Dealership in Colorado Springs, moving there in 1976. He later got an opportunity to separate from a former partnership and start a new business in Portland, Oregon, Walt Johnson Lincoln-Mercury, Mazda in Portland. Through his perseverance in his career Bro. Walt was elected to the National Advisory Dealer Board as first the Vice Chairman of the Board, and then later Chairman. Around that time Bro. Walt became friends with Henry Ford II and Lee Iacocca. Bro. Walt ended up owning several automotive dealerships along 122nd Street in East Portland, he later sold and leased some of the properties to other dealerships. Bro. Walt served as a judge and emcee for the Forest Grove Concours d’Elegance and loved restoring and judging classic cars. His home garage was a mix of beautiful collector cars spanning several decades.
He received his 50-year Masonic Service Award in Colorado in 2006. In Oregon, Bro. Walt affiliated with Lents Lodge No. 156, A.F.&A.M. of Oregon on March 12th, 2009, he served as Worshipful Master in 2010, received his 60-year service award in 2016, and the Hiram Award for outstanding service in 2019 from Lents Lodge. He was Lents’ Lodge Chaplin in 2020.
Bro. Walt became a Noble in the Al Kaly Shrine in Pueblo, Colorado, on May 24th, 1963, he later transferred his membership to the Al Kadar Shrine in Wilsonville, Oregon, where he was a Permanent Contributing Member. In the Oregon Shriner’s association Bro. Walt served on the Portland Shriner’s hospital board for many years where he ended his tenure as Chairman of the board.
In Scottish Rite, Bro. Walt was reinstated in Colorado Springs-Pueblo Valley on July 7th, 2003, demitted, and joined the Portland Valley by affiliation on December 30th, 2004. In the Portland Valley he was Invested as a Knight commander of the Court of Honour on November 14th, 2009, Coroneted as a 33rd Degree Inspector General Honorary on August 27th, 2013, and bestowed the 33° Grand Cross of the Court of Honour on August 19th, 2017. He served on the board as Chairman and was an emeritus member of the Orient of Oregon Speech & Language Charity, during his time as Chair he helped lead the organization through substantial changes to its structure that enabled the charity to continue its sole mission to help Oregon’s children directly with hearing and speech therapy. He served on the Board of the Oregon Scottish Rite Education Foundation, assisting to provide scholarships to Oregon high school students to attend college. He served as the Personal Representative to the Sovereign Grand Inspector General of Oregon for the Portland Valley from 2014 to 2016, and also as the Executive Director of the Orient of Oregon during the same time. He was Elected as the first President of the Portland Valley Temple Preservation Foundation in 2017 and served in that capacity until 2020.
Every year at Christmas, Bro. Walt bought socks for the homeless and handed them out, and he worked on programs to provide showers and sanitation facilities to people living on the streets of Portland. Bro. Walt had the ability to make people feel welcomed, needed, special, and comfortable. The entire membership of the Oregon Scottish Rite looked up to him and listened to him. He has helped many Brother Masons find jobs, mentored Brothers, and helped them meet the right people. Bro. Walt belonged to and knew the Who’s Who in Oregon and beyond. He will be missed, and his contributions to our craft and society at large remembered for many years to come.
On August 20th, 2022, the Great Architect of the Universe smiled upon him and taking him by the hand, gently led him to that “house not made with hands, eternal in the Heavens.” There is no death. All that is beautiful and good and true in human life is no more affected by the shadow called death than by the darkness that divides today from tomorrow. In this, our Brother’s hour of victory, we should rejoice that we can see far enough into the future to know that all is well with him. He is but a step-in advance of us and we thank the Great Architect that we had known and loved him for a while.
A Scottish Rite memorial will be held for Illustrious Brother Walt during the festivities at the Feast of the Manifesto on September 6th, 2022. The upcoming 2022 Portland Valley Fall Reunion will be named in his Honor.
Tickets are now on sale for the Portland Valley’s First Annual Fest of the Manifesto of the Consistory Sept. 6th, 2022 starting at 6pm.
This event is open to Scottish Rite Members, their significant other, and/or any accompanied guests of members, like perspective Rite members.
The Feast of the Manifesto festivities include a new ritual preformed by the Consistory Officers, a presentation on the history of the Manifesto by RWBro. Adam Bayer, 32°, N.M.J., and live performance by the mystical progressive folk soul band SILENT TEMPLE.

Greetings Brethren,
Because of this pandemic situation the membership of our fraternity has been negatively impacted. As Masons we are obligated to take measures to correct these problems. To accomplish this will require the cooperation and efforts of all Masons. It will be necessary for us to get back to grass roots Masonry, we don’t need to reinvent the wheel, we just need to kickstart our great Fraternity.
I’ve considered and now suggest a few areas we need to concentrate on. We owe it to the fraternity to replace ourselves annually and whenever possible. We must contact our members to promote and restart Masonry again. One way to do this would be to give our line officers a list of members to contact, both to check on their well being as well as to encourage lodge attendance. Another method could be to establish Scottish Rite Ambassadors in each Blue Lodge to promote Scottish Rite Masonry.
Whatever methods taken will require action. Action from our Brothers, action from our fraternity, action from ourselves.
If any Brother would like to join me in getting this great Fraternity back in gear, please contact Bro. Larry Burbidge, or myself, to be a part of the Membership Committee or to become a Scottish Rite Ambassador.
We will succeed, together!
S&F,
Ill. Duane Hugulet, 33°
Chairman, Orient of Oregon Membership Committee
Greetings Brethren,
Our leadership has asked Brother Duane Hugulet and myself to put our energies into building our Portland Valley attendance and membership. This is no small endeavor and will require a committed TEAM to accomplish. Who’s ready to join with us?
So far, our conversations have been about making phone calls to encourage current members to attend meetings, degrees, reunions, and other events. Remember, there is enormous value to be attained by attending each degree and even more by volunteering to be a cast or crew member. Also, we will be recruiting “Ambassadors” to visit lodges within our jurisdiction and spread the word about the opportunities to be found in Scottish Rite Masonry. We are encouraging feedback, comments, suggestions, and enthusiastic clamoring to join the TEAM!
At this point we are in the brainstorming phase, so all ideas will be appreciated and considered; snide comments come much later in the process.
Remember brothers, our fraternity is old and rich with history, tradition, opportunity, and fellowship. As we look back into our history, we observe countless examples of men growing into better men through selflessness and service. I believe that we can again build the Rite into a force in Masonry where Masons can come together, learn, grow, and enjoy the process.
Don’t forget that Duane and I are a couple of the old guys, and we will need an abundance of assistance with this project, so please do not hesitate to contact us with your enthusiastic ideas and HELP!
Have Fun Today,

Scottish Rite Brethren,
Although we are in the vacation season our masonic duties continue.
I am appointing Illustrious Ted Balestreri, 33°, as Chairman of the Education Committee. You all may know Illustrious Brother Ted from his various lectures and work on the University of Freemasonry program. I am fortunate enough to have a copy of his latest book “The Kadosh Garden of Kabbalistic Trees.”
Now is the time to work diligently to fill the Orient Officer vacancies in our Valleys. Every Valley should have a Personal Representative, General Secretary, and Treasurer. I need recommendations from the Valleys to fill any of these vacancies as soon as possible.
To be consistent in our recent changes in leadership, all edicts issued in the Orient of Oregon are now rescinded. Edicts and decrees are usually only temporary, they are used to make quick executive changes which may be needed due to inadequate governing policies. We should all make an attempt to read our bylaws and articles of incorporation. If any member feels these are inadequate, an effort will be made to rewrite these policies.
I still need the event calendars from all Orient Valleys. If you need assistance, please contact me. The calendars should be sent to Nathan Neff at the Portland Valley in the form of a Google Calendar link.
Illustrious Dale Vanderpool, 33°, the Orient Personal Representative, will act as a technical resource for those Valleys who need assistance with using electronic media. This may include ZOOM, Go to Meeting, or other conferencing services. Also, inform Illustrious Brother Dale if you are need hardware or computer upgrades.
Please update your Valley’s Websites, information that is several years old is not helpful for sojourners or Master Masons who wish to visit or join your Valley.
All Valleys who have building associations need to send me their most recent Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws.
Soon you will receive a message from our Membership Chairman, Illustrious Duane Hugulet, 33°. Illustrious Brother Duane will be coordinating membership training in the Orient which will be provided by the Supreme Council.
Enjoy your Summer!

Brethren,
The roll of the Workmen has been called, and one Master Mason, Brother Robert B. Piatt, 32°, KCCH, has not answered to his name. He has laid down the working tools of life and with them has left that mortal part for which he no longer has use. His labors here below have taught him to divest his heart and conscience of the vices and superfluity of life, thereby fitting his mind as a living stone for that spiritual building, that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. Strengthened in his labors here by faith in God, and confident of expectation of immortality, he has been granted admission to the Celestial Lodge above. His Brethren mourn the passing of a great man and Mason.
