Fall 2018 Reunion for the Portland Valley Scottish Rite

encampment

Have you as a Master Mason ever wondered about joining the Scottish Rite? Good News!
The Portland Valley Reunion and New Member Initiation this fall is being held on Friday November 2nd & Saturday November 3rd, 2018.

The Scottish Rite in Oregon began in Portland in 1870 headed by the first Sovereign Grand Inspector General, John C. Ainsworth, 33°, who has been followed by eleven other Honorable Masons holding that office up to the present S.G.I.G. Illustrious Brother Gary Kuney, 33º Active, appointed in 2009.

The Scottish Rite is often called the College of Masonry and this Fall we will be having a Class of new Candidates to join us in the quest for further Masonic Light. The ritual of the Scottish Rite comprises twenty-nine degrees, the fourth through the thirty-second, each of which, in the dramatic form of a vaudeville era Shakespearean style moral play, presents lessons of high purpose developing the moral character of the individual.

The theater here was built expressly for these degree presentations. Our Temple in the Historic Goose Hollow Neighborhood is the first building exclusively designed and built for the Scottish Rite Degrees and was used as a model for other Scottish Rite buildings throughout the world. It was the great architectural vision of Brother Richard H Martin, Jr, 33º who designed several other Fraternal Buildings in downtown. It is unique in still having over ninety hand painted stage drops available for the degree presentations. They were painted in the early 1900’s and are known for their outstanding perspective. The drops and fly system accompanying them are some of the best preserved in the country of their type and age. Our Temple along with being the last vaudeville era stage still in active use in Oregon, is also the oldest building in downtown Portland still occupied by its original inhabitants, the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry.

Portland Valley Feast Of Tishri

Greetings Brethren,

The Portland Valley Feast Of Tishri will be Tuesday October 2nd.

At 7:00 pm will be the Opening Ceremony with Dinner and Toasts to follow.

Under the Statutes of the Supreme Council this is considered one of the obligatory observances and sharing of our Fraternal spirit.

The history of the “Feast of Tishri” is based upon the Feast of the Tabernacle, “Succos” described in the Old Testament. In the book of Leviticus, Chapter 23, Verse 34 we read, “The Fifteenth Day of this Seventh Month (Tishri) shall be the Feast of the Tabernacles for seven days unto the Lord.” It was at one time considered the greatest festival among the early Hebrews.

In ancient days, the joyous festival was observed by the Israelites in the Palestinian Autumn when they had finished the agricultural toil of the year. They thanked God and praised Him for the abundance stored in barn and bin, and offered prayers to Him and He sent new rains for the coming year.

This is a closed ceremony for Scottish Rite Members.

Dinner is beef brisket braised with pomegranate onion confit; served with Israeli couscous and tomatoes, zucchini, and smoked paprika, roasted root vegetable, and spinach salad with citrus vinaigrette, almonds, and dates. It will be just $15, please RSVP by email to officemanager@portlandsr.com by no later than 11:00 am Monday the 1st of October.

My Brethren, the Roll of Workmen Has Been Called…

42563670_2203573366587729_3412128002278948864_o

Brethren,

The roll of the workmen has been called, and one Master Mason, Illustrious Brother Charles “Chuck” Howard, 33°, Honorary Sovereign Grand Inspector General, has not answered to his name. He has laid down the working tools of life and with them has left that mortal part for which he no longer has use. His labors here below have taught him to divest his heart and conscience of the vices and superfluity of life, thereby fitting his mind as a living stone for that spiritual building, that house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. Strengthened in his labors here by faith in God, and confident of expectation of immortality, he has been granted admission to the Celestial Lodge above. His Brethren mourn the passing of a great man and Mason.

Charles Frederick Howard, 33°, (Health Care Administrator) was born on May 27th, 1936 in Peoria, Illinois, and passed on Saturday, September 22nd, 2018 in Gresham, Oregon. Illustrious Brother Howard was a Member of Sandy Lodge No. 158 A.F. & A.M. in Sandy, Oregon and a Noble of the Mystic Al Kader Shrine in Wilsonville. He received the 32° on May 6, 1995 in Le Progress de L’ Oceania, Honolulu, Hawaii, he affiliated with Portland Valley in the Orient of Oregon in 1999, was invested as a Knight Commander of the Court of Honour on November 8th, 2003, and Coroneted as an Honorary Inspector General of the Supreme Council of the 33° in Portland Oregon on November 14th, 2009. He was also the Past General Secretary of the Portland Valley Scottish Rite from 2008 to 2010. We will honor his memory with a moment of reflection at the Feast of Tishri next Tuesday.

Memorial – Illustrious Brother Howard’s memorial service is to be held on Saturday, October 6th at 11 o’clock am at Saint Aiden’s Church, 17405 NE Glisan St, Portland, OR 97230. Worshipful Brother Peter Morrison will conduct the Masonic Funerary Service.
