21° – Noachite or Prussian Knight

In the 21st Degree we are admonished to be modest and humble, speaking only of the good in mankind and forgetting the evil. Slander is the exact opposite to mercy, for “Mercy blesseth him that gives and him that takes” while slander curses him that speaks it, and to say the least, does no good to the other. Our ancient brethren met to redress wrongs and defend the helpless. Masonry today has the same great mission and woe to him who would attempt to destroy it.

The apron is yellow, and contains an arm holding a sword, and a winged figure holding a key in the left hand, and the right forefinger on the lips (the “Egyptian figure of Silence”). The jewel is an point-up triangle, with an arrow, point downward, an arm holding a sword, and the motto “Fiat Justitia, Ruat Coelum.”

Laws is a founding member of the Lewis & Clark chapter of the Philalethes Masonic Research Society in Oregon and will be presenting as a representative on their behalf. For anyone not in the know, the Philalethes Society is the world’s oldest and largest Masonic Research Society.

Feast of Tishri

menorah

As the children of Israel were led through the wilderness, God decreed the celebration of a seven-day feast in the Jewish month of Tishri, during which they were to live in “sukkahs'” (shelters or Booths) – He decreed that this feast be celebrated annually to forever remind the Israelites that He had rescued them from Egypt. This “Feast of Tishri” (or “Feast of Succoth”) is thus a symbol of freedom.

Some 450 years after its origin, the Feast of Tishri was utilized in dedicating the newly completed King Solomon’s Temple, and this association led to its adoption by Scottish Rite Masonry to symbolize our dedication to brotherly love and human accord in a peaceful world.

This adaptation is evidenced in lessons taught by the Third Degree lecture (Blue Lodge), wherein we learn that David, King of Israel, was denied the privilege of building the Temple of God due to the “many wars and much bloodshed” associated with his reign. On his death, Solomon (his son) ascended the throne and brought peace and tranquility in the world through wisdom and righteousness – God thus chose him to perform “so great and glorious an undertaking” as that denied David. And so it was that through Solomon, construction of the Temple was seemingly guided by the hand of God – for indeed it was. Association of the Feast of Tishri with the dedication of the Temple of Solomon led to its third name – the “Feast of the Tabernacle”. The Feast of Tishri thus epitomizes the character, principles and purposes of Scottish Rite Masonry, all being consistent with the dictates of the God who spoke it into existence.

20th degree – Master of the Symbolic Lodge: This degree shows us Liberty, Fraternity and Equality. These teach moral, religious and philosophical understanding. This degree helps one to comprehend Deity, forces of nature, good and evil.

The apron is yellow, bordered in blue, with three concentric point-down triangles, with the Tetragrammaton (horizontal) and “Fiat Lux” (vertical) at the center, forming a cross. Message from PR

154

Dear Brothers,
The Portland Valley Leadership would like to give you some exciting updates on what is happening at the Rite.

As many of you know the Portland Valley has been going through some growing pains over the last several years. As with most fraternal organizations we’ve seen our membership slow and our expenses increase. In order to meet these difficult times we were forced to cut staff, reduce expenses and entertain offers on our historic building.

I’m happy to say that with disciplined actions, a striving for excellence and your steadfast support we are back on track and thriving. We are no longer spending thousands of dollars more a month than we bring in. Our investment accounts are again growing and our future is looking bright indeed.

We are also no longer in a position to accept less than $6.5 million dollars for our building and we’ve raised the price from $4.5 million to $6.5 million, a 30% increase.

None of these changes would have been possible without your dedication and support for our historic Masonic fraternity.

Here are a few things that you can look forward to at the Portland Valley Scottish Rite:

  • Beautiful new furniture in the Lounge
  • A new and revitalized library:
  • New handmade, custom wood cabinets with glass enclosures to secure and protect our treasures.
  • A library budget that will allow us to not only maintain the library but grow with new books, movies, and magazines for a state of the art Masonic study facility.
  • New individual library study tables with computers, individual lamps, etc.
  • A new card entry state of the art alarm system.
  • A budget that will allow us to mend and or replace some of our cherished costumes.
  • Badly needed roof repair, which should be completed by Fall 2014.
  • Budget for theater seat repair in 2015.

The last few years have been a lot of work for all of us. But due to your continued efforts, trust and brotherhood we are now starting to see the fruits of our labors.

We look forward to seeing you all on September 2nd when we will be honoring our Grand Master.

Fraternally

Ill Walt Johnson, 33°
Personal Representative
Portland Valley

The book sale will start on Monday, Aug. 25th at 9am until Wednesday at 5pm.

Lore of the Ring

When researching Freemasons For Dummies, I came across the urban legend that there are no 33rd degree rings in pawn shops because 33rd degree Masons dabble in witchcraft and are immolated in the practice of Magick™. Apparently, so this one goes, the ring goes *poof!* along with the body.

There are no howlers quite as hilarious as anti-Masonic howlers.

The truth is that the ring given to the 33rd degree Mason, at least in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, is either to be buried on the finger of the Brother when his end comes, or returned to the Supreme Council by his family so that it may be passed to another generation of Freemasons.

As to the symbolism, it has a triangle or delta (with the number “33”), in plain gold with no other color, and three distinct rings, which might be interpreted as 3+3. Inside, it is inscribed with the phrase “Deus Meumque Jus”, meaning “God and My Right” (or perhaps more clearly, ‘God and my moral rightness’).

As to the three rings, my own interpretation from here on is ‘Think twice before speaking once.’ But that’s just me.

There are approximately 11,000 33° Masons in the United States, roughly split 50/50 between the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction and the Southern Jurisdiction. And for those who have asked, the 33° ritual in the two jurisdictions is VERY different.

The number 33 was not just selected at random by the originators of the Scottish Rite. It has long been considered sacred within Christianity for several reasons. It is the multiple use of three, signifying the Holy Trinity. Christ was 33 years old when he ascended into heaven, and the gospels list thirty-three miracles performed by Christ. (Dan Brown is incorrect when he states, appropriately on page 333 of The Lost Symbol, that God is mentioned thirty-three times in the Book of Genesis. God is actually mentioned thirty-two times, in the first chapter of Genesis of the King James Bible.)

Thirty-three also appears in the Old Testament and other Jewish writings. Jacob had thirty-three children; Mosaic Law required that a woman purify herself for thirty-three days after her male child was circumcised; the holy day of Lag B’Omer occurs thirty-three days after the start of Passover; and the Seal of Solomon, or Star of David, made up of two intersecting triangles, is considered a graphic representation of 3+3. It also plays a prominent role in Kabbalah.

The religions of Islam, Zoroastrianism, Buddhism and Hinduism all associate sacred meanings with the number thirty-three. There are even thirty-three bones in the human vertebrae. Therefore, it appears in the Scottish Rite as a symbol of the fraternity’s universality as well as the perfection that every man should aspire to achieve in his soul.

Another curious aspect of the numbers thirty-two and thirty-three in regards to the Scottish Rite is that both Charleston, South Carolina, the birthplace of the Rite in 1801, and Jerusalem, location of Solomon’s Temple, lie between the 32° and 33° latitude. For many years it was common for Scottish Rite officers to include the latitude of their location when writing letters, articles or papers.

The double-headed eagle is the principal symbol of the 33rd degree of the Scottish Rite. It is not, as is mistakenly referred to in Brown’s text concerning the tattoo on Mal’akh’s chest, using his nipples as the bird’s eyes, a “double-headed phoenix.” The legendary phoenix, rising from the ashes, as described in Greek (and earlier) mythology, is not what depicted here at all.

Rather, the symbol comes from an early European rite of degrees called the Order of the Royal Secret, from which the Scottish Rite descended in 1801. The Royal Secret’s most advanced degree was called “The Knight of the White and Black Eagle.” The French Masonic authority that issued a patent (a document that authorizes the formation of new chapters) in 1761 was called the Council of the Emperors of the East and West. They used the double-headed eagle as a heraldic device (like a logo) on their documents, and it is believed they had appropriated the imagery from the period of the division of the Roman Empire into an eastern and western empire under the Byzantine emperors. The image of the double-headed eagle also appears in heraldry of the Holy Roman Empire, Germany, Austria, Russia, Armenia, Albania, Serbia and many others. It also appears as a symbol of the Greek Orthodox Church.

What makes the image specific to the Scottish Rite is the triangle on the eagle’s breast, and the number “33.”
