2015 Spring Reunion

Friday & Saturday, April 10th & 11th, 2015

The Spring Reunion is fast approaching and now is the time to start handing out petitions at your Blue Lodge and start brushing up on your part for the degrees.

Most of the directors have provided the schedules of practices and they are posted to the calendar so be sure to check it for dates and times.   There are still cast parts open in some degrees so anyone interested in a part contact the Scottish Rite Office for director contact information.

There is also critical  need for volunteers to assist the Rose Croix in reorganizing the wardrobe room as it needs to be completed well in advance of the reunion. Please contact the Wise Master Chris Foleen for more information on when they need help next.

For the reunion there is a need for volunteers as greeters both days, also help with setting up starting at noon on Friday and a building clean up crew for Saturday evening. If you are interested in supporting the Rite in this capacity contact the Office for more information.

The reunion schedule and times of the degrees will be published shortly when available.

It is never to early to RSVP for dinner and lunch for the reunion so, if you already know you will be here, call or email the Office right away at 503-226-7827 or email officemanager@portlandsr.com .

Degree24th Degree conferral – A job well done!!!

Brethren, On Tuesday February 17th, the Portland Valley conferred the 24th Degree. We had an outstanding audience with over 70 brothers in attendance! The degree was performed by some veteran Scottish Rite ritualists, and the cast included 2 brothers who joined the Portland Valley at our last reunion in November. Working together as a team with the cast, stage, sound, and lighting resulted in a successful degree and I want to thank everyone for their efforts. This was my first time directing a degree and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I want to sincerely thank the following brothers for their work and dedication which made this degree come together:

Cast:

  • Ill. C. Allan White 33°
  • Shaman Anderson 32°
  • Paul Blackburn 32° KCCH
  • Cliff Palmer 32°
  • Pete Stidd 32°
  • Tom Binkerd 32°
  • Jeff Schatz 32°
  • Will Anton 32°
  • Daniel Norgaard 32°
  • George Taft 32°

Stage, Sound & Lighting:

  • Mike Stone 32° KCCH
  • John Tucker 32°
  • Steve McAthern 32° KCCH
  • Nathan Neff 32°
  • Matt Turcotte 32°

Our degrees continue to be some of the best I’ve seen, and the enthusiasm of our brothers is clearly apparent due to high attendance and the desire to get involved and take part in our degrees.

Please join us for the 25th Degree conferral on Tuesday March 17th!

Fraternally,

Bryan Witt 32°

Rememberance and Renewal

The Ceremony of Remembrance & Renewal

March 24th, 2015 at 7 pm
The Portland Valley Scottish Rite Ainsworth Chapter of Rose Croix will be holding our Ceremony of Remembrance and Renewal on March 24th at 7 pm. This occasion is important not only in allowing us to pay our respect and honor to those who are no longer present, but also in renewing our commitment to ourselves and our Brethren. In doing so, we continue the noble work in which we are engaged.

“The Ceremony of Remembrance and Renewal, including the Mystic Banquet, is not a religious observance. It is neither the Feast of the Passover nor a Sacrament of Holy Communion, although it commemorates the spirit of both days.

Chapters of Rose Croix traditionally observed the celebration of the Mystic Banquet as a memorial service honoring the Knights of their Chapter who have passed on during the preceding year. This observance strengthens the ties of brotherly love, past and present. We meet together to break the bread of fraternity, to reconcile ourselves with those we may have offended, and to drink the wine of refreshment and renewal. Thus, we celebrate the lives of our departed Brethren and promise to abide by the New Law, the Law of Love, with our present Brethren and all mankind.

In this celebration, we also commemorate the lives all those who labored to improve mankind and were rewarded with betrayal, punishment, and death. Whether poet, religious leader, scientist or social reformer, all who seek to elevate humankind may be considered as Brethren. Masonry is duty, and its practice, often fraught with personal sacrifice, requires the performance of duty for the good of humanity.”

Forms and Traditions of the Scottish Rite by C. Fred Kleinknecht, 33°
This is one of the few ceremonies conducted by the Scottish Rite that is open to the public. Scottish Rite Masons, Master Masons and their wives or ladies and friends are invited to attend. RSVP is still requested for dinner. In keeping with the dignity inherent to this event alcohol will not be served prior to the dinner at 6:15 pm.

Happy New Year brethren!

The Portland Valley Membership Committee is gearing up for our Spring Reunion which will be Friday and Saturday, April 10th and 11th, 2015. After such a large reunion class last fall, and the renewed interest in the Scottish Rite Degrees, we are excited about another successful reunion in the Spring.

Your Membership Committee will be busy scheduling Blue Lodge visitations to promote the benefits of membership in the Scottish Rite, and we would love your help! Blue Lodge visitations will start the last week of February and go all through the month of March. If you are interested in joining us with some Blue Lodge Visitations, or want us to come to your Blue Lodge, get in touch with me or contact Nate in the office.

If you know of a brother who is interested in joining the Scottish Rite, give him a petition! All Scottish Rite brethren should carry a petition on them at all times in case they meet a curious brother. Also suggest that he look at our website where he can download a petition online.

There is so much more to Freemasonry and we have such a special brotherhood at the Scottish Rite, it would be a shame for any Master Mason not to experience it.

**The next Membership Committee meeting will be on Tuesday February 24th at 7:30PM, after the Scottish Rite University.

Please contact me anytime if you would like to get involved, and check the website calendar regularly for updates on events, degrees and meetings.

The 24th Degree will be conferred on Tuesday February 17th, and we hope to see you all there! Don’t forget to call or email the office with your dinner reservations no later than Noon the day before.

I look forward to seeing you all on Tuesday, the “Rite” night!

My Brethren, the roll of the workmen has been called, and one Master Mason, David E. Granum, 32°, has not answered to his name. He has laid down the working tools of the Craft and with them he has left that mortal part for which he no longer has use.  Brother David passed on 10/23/2014 at the age of 92.  A private ceremony has been planned for the immediate family.

Fraternal greetings from the Portland Valley Membership Committee.

We are delighted to announce that as of October 16th, we have received 14 petitions for our upcoming Fall Reunion in November, and anticipate 2-3 more before the end of this month. We are also conferring courtesy degrees for at least 7 petitioners from Vancouver, Salem and Eugene Valleys.  This should be the largest reunion class we’ve had in several years.

Our membership committee has attended 12 Blue Lodge visitations and have handed out several petitions and spoke with countless brothers about the benefits of membership at the Portland Valley.  Our visitations have renewed interest in the Scottish Rite among new brothers as well as existing Scottish Rite brethren.

We are having a Setting Maul Dinner on Tuesday October 28th.  Please join us at 5:30PM for social hour in the members lounge, followed by dinner, speakers and a presentation from our flagship charity, the Oregon Speech and Language Clinics. (KidTalk)  This is a great opportunity to meet the new petitioners and welcome them into the Scottish Rite.  I really hope to see as many of you as possible both at the Setting Maul Dinner and the Fall Reunion.

I want to personally thank the following brothers who have devoted time and energy to the Membership Committee to ensure our success.

  • Rick Komraus, 32° KCCH
  • Nathan Neff 32°
  • Kent Cox, 32° KCCH
  • Ill. Duane Hugulet, 33°
  • Paul Blackburn, 32° KCCH
  • Bruce Kent, 32°
  • John Kirk, 32°

I also want to thank the many brothers who have given advice, recommendations and suggestions on how to strengthen our valley and promote the Scottish Rite to ensure our vitality.  Please feel free to reach out to me or any of the brothers on the Membership Committee, as we are always looking for assistance with the promotion of our beloved Scottish Rite.

It’s truly a pleasure to serve our valley in this capacity.

Fraternal Regards,
Bryan Witt 32°
