Feast of Tishri

menorah

As the children of Israel were led through the wilderness, God decreed the celebration of a seven-day feast in the Jewish month of Tishri, during which they were to live in “sukkahs'” (shelters or Booths) – He decreed that this feast be celebrated annually to forever remind the Israelites that He had rescued them from Egypt. This “Feast of Tishri” (or “Feast of Succoth”) is thus a symbol of freedom.

Some 450 years after its origin, the Feast of Tishri was utilized in dedicating the newly completed King Solomon’s Temple, and this association led to its adoption by Scottish Rite Masonry to symbolize our dedication to brotherly love and human accord in a peaceful world.

This adaptation is evidenced in lessons taught by the Third Degree lecture (Blue Lodge), wherein we learn that David, King of Israel, was denied the privilege of building the Temple of God due to the “many wars and much bloodshed” associated with his reign. On his death, Solomon (his son) ascended the throne and brought peace and tranquility in the world through wisdom and righteousness – God thus chose him to perform “so great and glorious an undertaking” as that denied David. And so it was that through Solomon, construction of the Temple was seemingly guided by the hand of God – for indeed it was. Association of the Feast of Tishri with the dedication of the Temple of Solomon led to its third name – the “Feast of the Tabernacle”. The Feast of Tishri thus epitomizes the character, principles and purposes of Scottish Rite Masonry, all being consistent with the dictates of the God who spoke it into existence.

20th degree – Master of the Symbolic Lodge: This degree shows us Liberty, Fraternity and Equality. These teach moral, religious and philosophical understanding. This degree helps one to comprehend Deity, forces of nature, good and evil.

The apron is yellow, bordered in blue, with three concentric point-down triangles, with the Tetragrammaton (horizontal) and “Fiat Lux” (vertical) at the center, forming a cross. Its triangular shape relates to the “fourth great light, which reminds us of the Deity and his attributes.” The jewel is gold, with the same three concentric triangles.

Remembering Illustrious Bob Richmond

calledfromlabor

BRETHREN

We pause in our labors to pay our tribute of love and esteem to our departed Brethren who, since the last service of this Lodge, have passed from the cares and troubles of this transitory existence into the Celestial Lodge above.  We approach this solemn moment in a spirit of reverence and solemnity, our hearts heavy with the awareness that never again in the mortal life shall we experience the warm spirit of friendship and brotherhood that these, our deceased Brethren, extended to us. But, we are secure in the knowledge that they live eternally in the Lodge above and in our memory.

206

Robert Main Richmond

My Brethren, the roll of the workmen has been called, and one Master Mason, Ill. Robert Main Richmond  33°,  of The Baker Valley, has not answered to his name.

Brother Bob Richmond was born on January 3rd, 1938 in Thermopolis, Wyoming.

  • Brother Richmond received his Degrees in Masonry at Augusta Lodge #54, in Augusta, Montana.
  • He was initiated into the Scottish Rite in Billings Valley on October 1st, 1977
  • He Transferred to Baker Valley on November 10th, 1992
  • He was honored with his KCCH on November 8th, 2003
  • He received his 33rd Degree on September 8th, 2007
  • He served as Personal Representative to our SGIG from Sept 2010 to July 2013

Robert Main Richmond

January 3, 1938-September 5, 2014

Robert (Bob) Main Richmond left earth to arrive in his heavenly home on September 5, 2014 at the age of 76. Verle and Jud Richmond welcomed their first born, wee Robbie, on January 3, 1938 in Thermopolis, Wyoming. He had the honor of being the first Grandchild to Robert, his namesake, and first child born in 1938 in Hot Springs County. Image the thrill of his Mother being honored with $5.00 for this feat. He preceded to live his life honoring his Scottish ancestors, carrying their names with dignity. Bob is survived by his wife, Joyce, of 56 years, Daughter Robyn Richmond-Winden & Son-in-law Jerry Winden, Son Jeffrey and Daughter-in law Kristy, Daughter Verlyn Richmond and Special Daughter Cyndi Richmond, Granddaughters Kaylin, Janae, and Haylee Winden. Bob is survived by his Mother Katherine Verle Richmond, his Brother Dennis Richmond, Sisters Joan Richmond and Mary Richmond Anderson, Brother- in- Law John Ellis Ward and Sister-in-Laws, Jean Ward, Judy Metzger, and Lenna Bernhardt, plus many Special Cousins, Nieces and Nephews.

Bob had the joy and freedom of attending small country schools. His humor started at a young tender age by locking his teacher in the outhouse of the one room schoolhouse–to the delight of fellow students! He learned a valuable lesson in etiquette and proper decorum. After graduation from Cody High School, Bob attended the University of Colorado, transferring to University of Idaho to graduate in 1961 with his degree in Forestry.

Bob began his 36 year career with the Forest Service, pulling up stakes to travel back and forth between North Dakota and Montana, Virginia and Oregon where he retired as Supervisor of the Wallowa Whitman Forest. During these travels they were blessed with the opportunity to make life-long friends with so very many wonderful and interesting people.

Bob may have retired from the Forest Service but he kept going non-stop right up until he left his earthly home. He was a member of the Baker United Methodist Church serving as Finance Chairman. Most Worshipful Brother Robert excelled as Grand Master of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Oregon and served leadership roles for many other Appendant and Concordant bodies of Freemasonry. He was honored to be Worthy Grand Patron of the Grand Chapter of Oregon, currently Chairman of Revision of Laws and Advisor to the Most Worthy Grand Patron, General Grand Chapter, OES. Bob traveled tirelessly for many years serving others where needed and with total commitment.
Bob’s love and commitment to his family was at the forefront of his life. He was a Loving Husband, Son, and Brother. He was a wonderful Father, Grandfather, and Uncle. He could fill a room with his smile and sense of humor. Bob, an avid reader! To say, that he loved books, would be an understatement! In fact, Robert was on his way home loaded down with close to 8000 books when he left us with a massive heart attack in Dillon, Montana. Bob had a delightful way of sharing stories and reciting poetry. His delivery and style of those tales and poems would enchant all who were present. Bob was a man of integrity. His word and his handshake were true and unwavering. There was only one Bob Richmond and all who had the opportunity to have been a part of his life will be forever blessed. He has left a lasting impression on us all and will be in our hearts eternally. He was preceded in death by his Father George (Jud) Richmond.

There will be a Celebration of Bob’s life on Saturday, September 13, 2014,
10:00 am, Baker High School Auditorium, reception to follow.

In Lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials going to Baker United Methodist Church, Masonic and the Order of the Eastern Star Youth Scholarship Funds, ESTARL, or to a Charity of one’s choice. Thank you. This may be done through the Coles Tribute Center, 1950 Place Street, Baker City, OR 97814.

MAKE ME NO GRAVE

Make me no grave within that quiet place
Where friends shall sadly view the grassy mound,
Politely solemn for a little space,
As though the spirit slept beneath the ground.

For me no sorrow, nor the hopeless tear;
No chant, no prayer, no tender eulogy:
I may be laughing with the gods–while here
You weep alone. Then make no grave for me

But lay me where the pines, austere and tall,
Sing in the wind that sweeps across the West:
Where night, imperious, sets her coronal
Of silver stars upon the mountain crest.

Where dawn, rejoicing, rises from the deep,
And Life, rejoicing, rises with the dawn:
Mark not the spot upon the sunny steep,
For with the morning light I shall be gone.

Far trails await me; valleys vast and still,
Vistas undreamed of, canyon-guarded streams,
Lowland and range, fair meadow, flower-girt hill,
Forests enchanted, filled with magic dreams.

And I shall find brave comrades on the way:
None shall be lonely in adventuring,
For each a chosen task to round the day,
New glories to amaze, new songs to sing.

Loud swells the wind along the mountain-side,
High burns the sun, unfettered swings the sea,
Clear gleam the trails whereon the vanished ride,
Life calls to life: then make no grave for me!

Dear Brothers,
The Portland Valley Leadership would like to give you some exciting updates on what is happening at the Rite.

As many of you know the Portland Valley has been going through some growing pains over the last several years. As with most fraternal organizations we’ve seen our membership slow and our expenses increase. In order to meet these difficult times we were forced to cut staff, reduce expenses and entertain offers on our historic building.

I’m happy to say that with disciplined actions, a striving for excellence and your steadfast support we are back on track and thriving. We are no longer spending thousands of dollars more a month than we bring in. Our investment accounts are again growing and our future is looking bright indeed.

We are also no longer in a position to accept less than $6.5 million dollars for our building and we’ve raised the price from $4.5 million to $6.5 million, a 30% increase.

None of these changes would have been possible without your dedication and support for our historic Masonic fraternity.

Here are a few things that you can look forward to at the Portland Valley Scottish Rite:

  • Beautiful new furniture in the Lounge
  • A new and revitalized library:
  • New handmade, custom wood cabinets with glass enclosures to secure and protect our treasures.
  • A library budget that will allow us to not only maintain the library but grow with new books, movies, and magazines for a state of the art Masonic study facility.
  • New individual library study tables with computers, individual lamps, etc.
  • A new card entry state of the art alarm system.
  • A budget that will allow us to mend and or replace some of our cherished costumes.
  • Badly needed roof repair, which should be completed by Fall 2014.
  • Budget for theater seat repair in 2015.

The last few years have been a lot of work for all of us. But due to your continued efforts, trust and brotherhood we are now starting to see the fruits of our labors.

We look forward to seeing you all on September 2nd when we will be honoring our Grand Master.

Fraternally

Ill Walt Johnson, 33°

The book sale will start on Monday, Aug. 25th at 9am until Wednesday at 5pm.

SR Lore

33C

Lore of the Ring

When researching Freemasons For Dummies, I came across the urban legend that there are no 33rd degree rings in pawn shops because 33rd degree Masons dabble in witchcraft and are immolated in the practice of Magick™. Apparently, so this one goes, the ring goes *poof!* along with the body.

There are no howlers quite as hilarious as anti-Masonic howlers.

The truth is that the ring given to the 33rd degree Mason, at least in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, is either to be buried on the finger of the Brother when his end comes, or returned to the Supreme Council by his family so that it may be passed to another generation of Freemasons.

As to the symbolism, it has a triangle or delta (with the number “33”), in plain gold with no other color, and three distinct rings, which might be interpreted as 3+3. Inside, it is inscribed with the phrase “Deus Meumque Jus”, meaning “God and My Right” (or perhaps more clearly, ‘God and my moral rightness’).

As to the three rings, my own interpretation from here on is ‘Think twice before speaking once.’ But that’s just me.

There are approximately 11,000 33° Masons in the United States, roughly split 50/50 between the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction and the Southern Jurisdiction. And for those who have asked, the 33° ritual in the two jurisdictions is VERY different.

The number 33 was not just selected at random by the originators of the Scottish Rite. It has long been considered sacred within Christianity for several reasons. It is the multiple use of three, signifying the Holy Trinity. Christ was 33 years old when he ascended into heaven, and the gospels list thirty-three miracles performed by Christ. (Dan Brown is incorrect when he states, appropriately on page 333 of The Lost Symbol, that God is mentioned thirty-three times in the Book of Genesis. God is actually mentioned thirty-two times, in the first chapter of Genesis of the King James Bible.)

Thirty-three also appears in the Old Testament and other Jewish writings. Jacob had thirty-three children; Mosaic Law required that a woman purify herself for thirty-three days after her male child was circumcised; the holy day of Lag B’Omer occurs thirty-three days after the start of Passover; and the Seal of Solomon, or Star of David, made up of two intersecting triangles, is considered a graphic representation of 3+3. It also plays a prominent role in Kabbalah.

The religions of Islam, Zoroastrianism, Buddhism and Hinduism all associate sacred meanings with the number thirty-three. There are even thirty-three bones in the human vertebrae. Therefore, it appears in the Scottish Rite as a symbol of the fraternity’s universality as well as the perfection that every man should aspire to achieve in his soul.

Another curious aspect of the numbers thirty-two and thirty-three in regards to the Scottish Rite is that both Charleston, South Carolina, the birthplace of the Rite in 1801, and Jerusalem, location of Solomon’s Temple, lie between the 32° and 33° latitude. For many years it was common for Scottish Rite officers to include the latitude of their location when writing letters, articles or papers.

The double-headed eagle is the principal symbol of the 33rd degree of the Scottish Rite. It is not, as is mistakenly referred to in Brown’s text concerning the tattoo on Mal’akh’s chest, using his nipples as the bird’s eyes, a “double-headed phoenix.” The legendary phoenix, rising from the ashes, as described in Greek (and earlier) mythology, is not what depicted here at all.

Rather, the symbol comes from an early European rite of degrees called the Order of the Royal Secret, from which the Scottish Rite descended in 1801. The Royal Secret’s most advanced degree was called “The Knight of the White and Black Eagle.” The French Masonic authority that issued a patent (a document that authorizes the formation of new chapters) in 1761 was called the Council of the Emperors of the East and West. They used the double-headed eagle as a heraldic device (like a logo) on their documents, and it is believed they had appropriated the imagery from the period of the division of the Roman Empire into an eastern and western empire under the Byzantine emperors. The image of the double-headed eagle also appears in heraldry of the Holy Roman Empire, Germany, Austria, Russia, Armenia, Albania, Serbia and many others. It also appears as a symbol of the Greek Orthodox Church.

What makes the image specific to the Scottish Rite is the triangle on the eagle’s breast, and the number “33.”

Greetings Brethren,

I am honored for the opportunity to take on the role of Membership Committee Chairman and I am excited about the great potential that awaits us at the Portland Valley. Membership is one of my passions here at the Scottish Rite, and I’m looking forward to working together to bring in new candidates for the reunions, as well as reaching out and engaging our existing members. I am so proud to be a Scottish Rite Mason in the Portland Valley and I know you all share that same pride. Joining the Scottish Rite will always be one of the best decisions I have ever made. The future of the Portland Valley rests on our collective shoulders, and it is up to each one of us to contribute to its growth and success.

If you are interested in being on the Membership Committee, helping out with Blue Lodge visitations; being a Blue Lodge Ambassador; making phone calls or if you have ideas or suggestions, we want to hear from you!

I look forward to working with you to ensure the health and vitality of our Portland Valley for many years to come.
Thank you.
Fraternally,
Bryan Witt 32°
