Please review the article on our recent change in hat storage.  Thanks to Michael Robinson, 32° for cleaning all the hat lockers; assigning new places for all the hats and taking an inventory of all remaining hats.  It’s a job that should have been done decades ago, but no one wanted to “tackle it”.

Memorial Day

197

WHY MEMORIAL DAY IS OBSERVERED

Early Observances of Memorial Day

The Civil War claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history, requiring the establishment of the country’s first national cemeteries. By the late 1860s Americans in various towns and cities had begun holding springtime tributes to these countless fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with flowers and reciting prayers.

Did You Know?

Each year on Memorial Day a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time.

It is unclear where exactly this tradition originated; numerous different communities may have independently initiated the memorial gatherings. Nevertheless, in 1966 the federal government declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day. Waterloo-which had first celebrated the day on May 5, 1866-was chosen because it hosted an annual, community-wide event, during which businesses closed and residents decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags.

Decoration Day

On May 5, 1862, General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance later that month. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.

On the first Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of the 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried there. Many Northern states held similar commemorative events and reprised the tradition in subsequent years; by 1890 each one had made Decoration Day an official state holiday. Many Southern states, on the other hand, continued to honor their dead on separate days until after World War I.

Evolution of Memorial Day

Memorial Day, as Decoration Day gradually came to be known, originally honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War. But during World War I the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict, and the holiday evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all wars.

For decades, Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30, the date Logan had selected for the first Decoration Day. But in 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees; the change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday.

Memorial Day Traditions

Cities and towns across the United States host Memorial Day parades each year, often incorporating military personnel and members of veterans’ organizations. Some of the largest parades take place in Chicago, New York and  Washington, D.C. Americans also observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries and memorials. On a less somber note, many people throw parties and barbecues on the holiday, perhaps because it unofficially marks the beginning of summer.

ARLINGTON NATIONAL CEMETARY

198

ARLINGTON, Va. – It was a simple but meaningful process repeated on hallowed ground about 220,000 times on Thursday: Toe of the combat boot placed against the center of a headstone, flag planted at the heel.

With that small gesture, about 1,000 soldiers paid respects as they fanned out at Arlington National Cemetery ahead of Memorial Day weekend, each pausing to stake an American flag into the soil of each grave to honor those buried there.

“They’ve given the ultimate sacrifice for their country,” said. Pvt. Juan Garcia. “We wouldn’t be able to live the lifestyle that the entire country does if it wasn’t for the men and women we’re honoring today. “It’s not something that should be taken lightly. It’s an actual person that died. That’s someone’s brother, someone’s sister, someone’s mom or dad.”

The participating soldiers were all members of the Old Guard. The event is known as the “Flags In” ceremony and has taken place annually since 1948, when the Old Guard was designated as the Army’s ceremonial unit.

The soldiers also placed flags at the cemetery’s columbarium, which holds cremated remains. Four flags were also placed at the Tomb of the Unknowns.

The flags will remain throughout the holiday weekend until Tuesday.

And despite the holiday usually being celebrated with cookouts, Staff Sgt. Francisco Armenta said he hoped that everyone would take a minute to remember those who have sacrificed their lives. “It’s not just for barbecues, beaches, anything like that,” Armenta said. “It’s to remember the soldiers that fell in the past.”

Hat Storage

201

HAT STORAGE – Michael Robinson, 32°

Upon completion it was found that there were 1120 slots in 80 lockers, about 350 hats were removed and about 266 were left. With permission of the PR on April 10-11, 2014 all hats were relocated. Lists were placed on the outside of each locker to help members find their hats. Everything was placed in alphabetical order and each shelf inside was labeled.

Each locker was filled halfway and we still filled less than half of the lockers. The bottom 3 slots in each locker were let empty as they gather the most dust and are difficult to access. We now are using lockers 1-43 on the south and west sides. The north side is empty and the east side houses available hats. Lockers 66 – 79 have hats in boxes labeled and in order by size. Lockers 80-82 have KCCH, 33rd and 50 year hats

Attention: After a thorough cleaning and purging of the metal hat lockers, all hats have been moved to lockers 1-43 on the south and west sides. Each locker has a list on the front of which hats are in it. Everything is in alphabetical order and each shelf is labeled. Find your name on the list open the locker and your hat should be on the shelf above your name. A list will be in the office as well. My apologies for any inconvenience, and to those who discovered the change before this notice was given. ***Any problems contact Michael Robinson at sleepingdragon777@yahoo.com

I have about 200 hats to still sort through and will maintain the list and lockers as best I am able. I have included the most updated list of locker assignments. Also included is a list of all the hats that were taken out. Although I have already given some hats out I will try to note who is given what hats in case a problem arises. If someone’s hat was removed by mistake I will make every attempt to recover it and if needed replace it.

The Masonic Work Ahead of Us

Fac et aliquid operis, ut semper te diabolus inveniat occupatum

(Do something, so that the devil may always find you busy)

–St. Jerome

With our recent installation of officers I am reminded of the work that we Scottish Rite masons have before us. It is not only our duty to maintain the legacy of our beloved Rite but also to evolve, grow and ensure its continued success.  There is no other way to accomplish this grand task without rolling up our sleeves and getting to work.

He who works faithfully to attain a purpose by the work itself prays to God. Apathy, indifference, and selfishness it is these that make masonry inefficient. (From the 32 Degree)

When I ponder the words apathy, indifference and selfishness from the 32nd degree, I am reminded of the word, “idleness”.  There is no greater gift than life, and likewise, I can think of no greater vice than that of idleness, for idleness like a parasite, slowly steals from the host its vitality, happiness and productivity.

For an example of the impiety of idleness we need look no further than the old Aesop’s fable of The Tortoise and the Hare. This story very simply and eloquently reveals to us the virtue of industry and the perils of idleness. The story is about a rabbit that scorns a slow-moving turtle and challenges him to a race. The hare rapidly leaves the turtle behind and is so confident of his victory that he decides to take a nap halfway through the race. However, when he awakes, the hare finds that the tortoise, laboring diligently has arrived before him to win the race.

A hard day of productive work is very satisfying to the soul. When we toil at a worthy project we create something of value to ourselves and to others. That creation often carries on even when we are no longer present to enjoy them ourselves. For example, the engineer who spends years to learn his craft and then more years in the creation of a bridge cannot only look upon his own labor with contentment but likewise the joy of its creation can also be felt by the commuter, who now reduces his commute time by an hour, and can spend that saved hour with friends, family and community.

Another example of the benefits of productive work would be Mother Theresa. From eighteen years of age she was on missions of charity and she spent her whole adult life in easing the pain of children.  She is a remarkable human being who has inspired others to carry on her mission. Her efforts will continue to affect the lives of people she touched personally or were touched by her story and selflessness. Her efforts have created a legacy that will last and inspire for millennia to come.

Many today seem to envy what they perceive to be the idleness of the rich, but I don’t believe it is the idleness that they are coveting, but rather the wealthy’s ability to pursue the labor of their choosing. The greatness of man is not in his ability to loaf or to while away his time, but rather in his ability to leave a legacy of virtue that carries on long after he is gone.

We Scottish Rite masons are reminded in the fifth degree that our time is short and that death can come to us at any moment. We are therefore inspired to use our time wisely not in idleness but rather in the building of something better, both within us and around us—for ourselves, but more importantly for the betterment of mankind and our beloved Scottish Rite.

Masonic Philosophy

172

With our Portland Valley Scottish Rite Spring Reunion happening this week I looked back on one of my journal entries when I first joined the Scottish Rite several years ago. I hope that some may find if of interest particularly some of our new brothers that may be having some of the the same thoughts and questions I had when first joining this legendary fraternity.

* * *

Within our own conscience and inner self, do we think we are practicing Masonic philosophy or do we admit that we are only theorists? This question is far from superfluous because the answer we give will allow us to determine if we are wholly studying and practicing Masonic teachings or just playing at masonry.

Can we clearly bring up the practical application on Masonic philosophy in everyday conversation? What is our aptitude to explain clearly our conception of the mystical laws and principles taught in the degrees. Since Masonic philosophy is present at all levels of existence, is it natural to include it in even the most minor occurrences of our daily life? During discussions with others, are we able to call upon analogies to make certain philosophic and esoteric messages understood? If this is not the case it seems we must cultivate the art as it forms the basis of the positive influence that we can exert upon others in both mystical matters and Masonic philosophy.

How then are we to practice the craft daily, in our everyday conversations with our neighbors, friends, co-workers, mail-person, fellow masons, etc? Living an honorable life may lead some (likely few) to respect our masonic discipline, but how then are we to progress the craft in an era where time is the most valued commodity, where virtue is synonymous with suckers and money is the only deity the world seems to prostrate themselves before?

In all honesty my sins are purely hedonistic in nature, all I want to do is chase Hermes…sit in my study… read, ponder, contemplate, experiment and ask questions of those more knowledgeable than myself. I have quite literally taken far more from masonry than I have given…but it again begs the question-how do we give effectively and without harm?

“…If you do not feel pure enough or disinterested enough to be faithful to this sacred pact, if corrupt roots are still mixed with germinating seeds that must bear fruit in this fertile soil, do not undertake to bring people back to reason; you would only add to their ignorance and to their madness. On the contrary, refrain from giving such harmful assistance; they will stray far enough without you help.” Louis Claude De Saint-Martin

I wonder whether there can be any compromise in matters of Masonic philosophy, where it seems only purity of action and intentions can make us an efficient agent of the craft. I’m not quite sure how to live up to those expectations.

I am a man without lineage, legacy or education. All that I know I have learned from solitary study of books, attentive listening and reasoning. Social awkwardness is my closest companion and imagination and daydreaming my only God given talents. I must seek, with these few talents I possess, a way to contribute and make a positive and lasting contribution to the craft?

Leadership Conferense

179The Regional Leadership conference was held on March 13, 14, and 15 at the Double Tree Hotel at the Lloyd Center in Portland.  The Orient of Oregon hosted this event with strong support from Brothers of all the Valleys of Oregon.  These Brothers managed transportation, registration and acted as facilitators during the “round table forums”.

The conference was attended by over 200 Masons, from as far away as Tokyo.  Three round table forums were held on Friday and Saturday discussing new member strategies; member retention and Masonic Education.

Attendees and wives relaxed at a wine and cheese social on Friday while wives attended  a special Columbia River Gorge Tour and luncheon at the Columbia Gorge Hotel.

Those who attended this event departed with great memories of Oregon and the Brothers of this Orient. (pictured is Grand Commander Ron Seale).

Rememberance and Renewal

We will be celebrating the Scottish Rite “Ceremony of Remembrance & Renewal” on March 11, 2014.

26
This Celebration is neither the Feast of the Passover nor a Sacrament of Holy Communion, although it commemorates the spirit of both days. To our Jewish Brethren it signifies the Feast of the Passover. To our Christian Brethren it signifies the Last Supper. To our Brethren of the Rose Croix it is known as the Mystic Banquet.

How long have we been performing this Ceremony? In times past we celebrated Maundy Thursday and Easter Sunday Services. In 1994 it was deemed appropriate that a Scottish Rite nonobligatory, non religious “Celebration of Remembrance & Renewal” be performed near the vernal equinox (the first day of Spring).

It is hard to conceive of any Masonic Ritual more beautiful or inspiring. We meet together to break the bread of fraternity, to reconcile ourselves with those we have offended, and to drink the wine of refreshment and renewal. This year we will be “Memorializing” our recently departed Brethren.
